In-the-Moment Meditation

August 14, 2023

It’s Wednesday afternoon, you’re at your desk, and you just want to go home.

It’s Friday night, you’re on your way out, and your friend just texted and canceled.

It's Sunday night, and you don't know what to wear to school tomorrow.

It’s Monday morning, and well... you have to get out of bed.

There is a scenario similar to these that we have all been in. I know you can think of at least one situation that it feels like everything is falling apart. You know how I know? Because I can, too. When this happens, it doesn’t have to be doom and gloom.

Stop. Breathe. Close your eyes and sit still. Keep breathing.

While you are still, pay attention to your energy and your surroundings; your immediate space, your breath, the sounds in the atmosphere.  Without thinking, what is one good thing about this moment? This single moment that you are in, right now?

In contrast to the above, it could be:

You have a job. You are earning an honest living.

You have friends. You look good! Call up another friend you haven’t seen in a while, and invite them out! OR... yay, I can go home and relax!

You are getting a valuable education to better your future. OR, how cool! An opportunity to put different pieces together that I would've never thought of before!

You have a bed. You are not homeless.

When a negative situation arises, remind yourself it doesn’t have to stay negative. Use this quick and simple meditation technique:

Stop. Breathe. Close your eyes and sit still. Keep breathing.

Pay attention to your energy and your surroundings.

What is one good thing about this moment?

It doesn't have to be something obvious or dramatic, it can be any small thing. Regardless of what you observe, there is one there, I promise.

Namaste
